By Monica Klopfer On
July 11th and 12th members and friends of Soroptimist International of
Everett teamed up with the American Cancer Society in their fight against
cancer by participating in the Everett Relay for Life! In all, the event
raised over $70,000 locally. SI of Everett made a great first year's contribution
by both participating and helping to raise over $1,600. Additionally,
the event strives to raise community awareness through early detection
and a healthier lifestyle. |

The opening ceremony was highly charged as cancer survivors took to the track in a Victory Lap! Our own Lurlynn Clifford was among the many men, women, and children who cheerfully took the first lap. For the second lap, she was joined by her husband George, team members Lori Powlas and her friend Patty Puckett, Sue Levison and her husband Mark, Monica Klopfer and her nephew Chaz Kumlander, and Carolyn Diepenbrock. Team members, in true relay fashion, kept at least one person on the track at all times during the 18-hour event at Mariner High School stadium. The stadium was filled with the sounds of live music, lap prize announcements, and lots of fun! As night fell, a Luminaria ceremony paid tribute to those who lost the battle with cancer and to those who are still fighting the disease. The only light on the track was that of the luminaries containing names, loving memories, photographs, and prayers of remembrance. For me, as well as many others in attendance, this portion of the event was a highly moving experience. As team members Carolyn, Monica and her nephew Chaz slept in tents at the stadium, brave team members Vanessa Horning and her husband, Randy kept to the track during the midnight hours! With daylight came steaming lattes courtesy of Carolyn's husband. A pajama fashion show added to the fun. Team member Bernie Terry provided much needed reinforcement to get Team SI of Everett to the big finish at noon! Monica's husband, Don arrived in time for the final laps, and to assist the weary relay members in packing up their camp until next year! Along with co-chair Carolyn Diepenbrock, I look forward to making this an annual event for SI of Everett, and I challenge us as a group to exceed our fund raising effort each year! |
