Lewis and Clark Had Nothin' on Team Diva!

Contributed by Jacque Sonderman

After a week of rain and wind, Saturday, October 18th arrived with blue skies and sunshine…a perfect day for the 3000 people who arrived at Sacajawea State Park for Lewis and Clark Heritage Day, “Down the Great Columbia”.

The plans prepared by committee members Hazel Hanson, Jacque Sonderman and former member, Cathleen Williams, for our Soroptimist Food Booth were carried out beautifully. Many thanks go out to the following people…what a TEAM!

  • Scotty and Phyllis Getchel for picking up and returning the generator we rented to share with Fiesta Mexican restaurant.
  • Juli Massengale and Alice Jones for the ovens, the bowls and spoons, for storing the cases of pop and bottled water, and especially for their expert advice.

raise scholarships to their community

  • Cathleen Williams for baking the delicious cornbread muffins and for providing the canopy.
  • Hazel Batchelor’s recipe for chili was a hit and we are grateful for her purchasing all of the ingredients…and bringing her granddaughter, Jazmine, who helped cover the tables with plastic and sorted the muffins into individual baggies.
  • Debbie Clark for hauling supplies to the park.
  • Hazel Hanson graciously took the time to attend a class and become certified for a health card. In addition to picking up the ovens, thermometer and beverages from Edible Arts, Hazel was a great salesperson and cahier at our booth.
  • Hats off to the rest of the TEAM, Amy Metcalf, Janet O’Neill, Linda Nelson and Jean & Dan DuFresne contributed to having sold all of the chili and pop, and most of the cornbread!
  • A special thanks to the Franklin County Society for allowing us the use of their tables.

This event not only resulted in great PR, as Hazel Batchelor made a new banner for us, we were also listed on the big sign by the stage as an event sponsor.

This day of service falls into the category of Education, since so many families learned more about the Corps of Discovery stay at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers on October 16, 17 & 18 in 1805, where 200 Indians met them.

In closing, it was an honor to partner with The Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau’s Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Committee resigning member. The Board of Directors also allocated $10,000 to this year’s women’s grants and scholarship program.
